Have you ever met someone who always seems happy? Regardless of what has been thrown their way, somehow they manage to stay upbeat and positive—even when it seems that everything is crashing in around them.
Being happy is a choice. While it’s something that we may have to work at, being happy can produce amazing results and will leave you feeling less stressed and more relaxed.
“It is not happy people who are thankful. It is thankful people who are happy.”
Many happy people have found that starting their morning right helps to set the tone for the rest of the day. A positive morning routine is a great way to help get you into an excellent mindset—enabling you to tackle anything that may arise during the day.
With this in mind, let’s look at a few things that you can do in the morning, to make a real difference in your day.
Starting the morning off with some quiet time to be grateful is an excellent way to get your morning off to a great start. Many people find that jotting down things that they’re thankful for can help to focus their thoughts in the right direction. Gratitude has been linked with happiness, and it certainly is one of the best ways to consciously focus your thoughts in the right direction, setting a pattern for the rest of the day.
Most of us roll out of bed and perform our morning duties on autopilot, at least until after that first cup of coffee. But when was the last time you actually thought about what you were doing in the morning? Happy people are intentional about their thoughts and actions, and by being intentional first thing in the morning, you can help to set your day up for success.
Happy people know when to let go. Starting each day fresh is a great way to tap into some of their happiness. Don’t hold onto the grudges, anger, or resentment from the day before. Don’t recall all the negative things that took place or the mistakes that you made. Instead, take a deep breath and redirect your thoughts in a positive way. Focus on the good things that have happened, the positive traits that you and others have. No one is perfect, and being able to forgive and move on will do wonders for your mindset.
Even though many of us have some sort of morning routine, how many of our morning routines are relaxing? Some of us hit the snooze button before getting up and most of us rush through our routine. If you have a family, things are even more hectic! Many happy and successful people find that getting up half an hour earlier and spending some time alone, doing things that they enjoy, helps to set them up for a great day.
By starting your day with a healthy breakfast—and no that cup of coffee doesn’t count!—you’ll have much-needed energy that you need to function at your best all morning. Ideally, you should start your morning with some quality protein to keep you going for longer. (Protein is also essential for repairing muscle damage and alleviating those pesky aches and pains.)
Accomplish Important Tasks First
Finally, once you’ve eased into your morning, map out your day and pick your top three tasks. Get started on your to-dos, which will help you gain momentum to continue to be productive throughout the day. A good day planner will help to make it easier to prioritize those tasks!
Being happy isn’t the end goal in life, but rather, it’s a way of life. By choosing to be happy, you allow yourself the freedom to rid yourself of negative thoughts and feelings, and free yourself up to choose something much better.
