Would you like to live a well-designed life? For most of us, this is one overarching goal we could get behind!

After all, there’s something dreamy about a life that’s in balance and under control. It’s a goal that most of us strive for—whether or not we realize it consciously.

All too often, though, we tend to set goals sporadically, in response to things that have happened, rather than strategically—with the aim of bettering ourselves or others in some way. However, taking a proactive approach and creating resolutions or goals that are in-line with our big-picture goals is a far better way to create lasting goals—ones that will stick even long after the novelty wears off.

Living a well-designed life means leading a life that is intentional, and of course, balanced as well. While the details of this will look different for each of us, there are a few things that we can do that will help us to lead the very best version of our lives—one that allows us to take time to make time for things that we enjoy, to fully appreciate everything that we have to be thankful for, and of course, to carve out time to spend with those we love. And there’s no better time than the present!

If you’d like to make this the year that you create a well-designed life, here’s a look at a few things that you can do to make it happen.

1. Create Healthy Habits

Healthy habits such as regular exercise, eating well, and getting plenty of sleep are an important part of leading a well-designed life. While it might be challenging, carving out personal time and taking care of yourself can help you perform at your best. When you take the time to practice self-care, in the form of exercise or by eating healthy and nutrient-dense food, you’ll feel better, and you’ll be able to function at your best. Caring for yourself needs to come first. Creating healthy habits can go a long way in helping you to live your best life!

2. Know Your Priorities

What is important to you? What would you consider your top priorities? Your friends and family? Your career? Your goals? While there are a lot of things that might be important to us, identifying our top priorities makes it easier to prioritize our time and energy. It can also help you determine if you are doing the right things or if you are simply spinning in circles all in the name of busy-ness. Identify your priorities, and then make sure your day-to-day actions align with them.

3. Practice Gratitude

Research has shown that practicing gratitude or feeling grateful can result in increased happiness. Take a few minutes each day to jot down things that you are grateful for and spend some time reflecting on things that you’re thankful for. Remember, you don’t have to save your grateful moments for the big areas of life. Be grateful for the simple things as well! Taking the time to appreciate things—both big and small—can have a big impact on your life.

4. Expect the Unexpected

“Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans,” John Lennon reportedly said. And it’s true. Often life doesn’t go quite how we envision. Rather than stressing over things when they don’t go the way you were hoping, it’s important to recognize that this is completely normal. Things don’t always go as planned! Learning to roll with the punches and not stress when things don’t go according to plan is a great way to find more balance in your life and more happiness as well. There is nothing wrong with having a plan or schedule, but it’s important to acknowledge that sometimes life happens. You get sick, your kids get sick, you may get stuck in traffic, or miss an appointment. Instead of stressing when something happens, recognize that things will happen—and that’s okay.

5. Stay Positive

Finally, it’s important to remember to stay positive! While this can be a challenge, particularly when things aren’t going well, the good news is that with practice, it can slowly start to become a more natural response. Being positive can change your mindset, outlook, and your whole way of life. Of course, it’s okay to have moments of sadness or even anger, but remember to come back to the other side and see the positive things that happen in your life. It will help to make for a much smoother ride!

While there are many things that you can do to create an intentional and well-designed life, the above tips are an excellent place to start! Jot down your thoughts, your goals, your dreams—then narrow in on what you hope to accomplish this year. Once you have a list, get to work on breaking your goals up into smaller, doable steps, and putting them down in your planner. Remember to make time for those things that are important to you! In the end, you’ll feel more fulfilled and far happier, knowing that you’re working on your goals and devoting time to your priorities—and you’ll be able to enjoy a far more balanced and intentional year as well.
